Heaven Sent for Dion
In 2017, Dion arrived in Indianapolis with four kids, no stable housing, and a situation that felt impossible to escape. A former Marine who had proudly served six years, Dion was sleeping in a shelter, going without medication, and watching his family get split up across different shelters. His spouse, Krissy, who had recently suffered a stroke, was staying across town at a women’s shelter.
For a man whose identity had been shaped by discipline, honor, and service, asking for help was one of the hardest things he’d ever done.
Dion joined the Marines at 21. “That’s where I did a lot of my growing up at,” he said. Six years of service later, civilian life didn’t hand him a soft landing. By the time he relocated to Indianapolis, the weight of it all, no housing, no medication, four children depending on him, was crushing.

Dion & Krissy
Krissy, meanwhile, was navigating her own crisis. After her stroke, Krissy traveled to different states, trying to find adequate medical care to recover. It was a desperate time.
The family was fractured. Dion was struggling. And neither of them knew yet how much things were about to change.
A pamphlet about HVAF caught Dion’s eye. So, he reached out.
And you were there to answer the call.
When Dion connected with HVAF, he was shocked how much they cared. His HVAF case worker didn’t just take notes over the phone. She came to the shelter he was staying at to visit him in person to see what he was going through. That gesture, showing up, meant everything.
“They cared enough to see what I was actually going through,” Dion said.
Within months, HVAF had helped Dion access the medication he needed, connected him with stable housing, and opened doors to employment. “When I got to HVAF, they sped everything up,” he said. “Everything worked out, and I met some really good people.”
For the first time in a long time, Dion had stability. He had a place to call his own. And soon, he’d have something even more important.
His family. Together.
Thanks to you, Dion and Krissy were eventually reunited, along with their four children, all under one roof. Donated furniture filled the home. Their kids had beds. Everything was in place.

When Dion was asked what it felt like to finally have his family together again, he paused for only a moment.
“Heaven.”
That single word carries everything. Years of separation, shelter stays, stress, and struggle, resolved into one feeling that your support helped make real. “I hadn’t been with the kids in years,” Dion said. “I was really happy about that.”
Dion’s story didn’t end well by accident. It ended well because people like you chose to give. Because HVAF staff showed up in person. Because a donated furniture set filled a home. Because someone said yes when a veteran finally asked for help.
There are more Dions out there. Veterans who served honorably, who are now navigating a world that hasn’t made room for them. Veterans who need medication, housing, community, and a reason to believe things can still turn around.
You continue to give them that reason.
