Daniel’s Journey – Heart of a Lion
Historic Hinkle Fieldhouse brimmed with excitement as families and friends filed in for this special day. The air smelled of popcorn, the band began the ceremonial march, and graduates filled their seats as the crowd erupted in applause. Every graduate carried a story, a journey shaped by challenges, perseverance, and hope.
One young man, Daniel, stood out at the front of the class, preparing to sing the National Anthem with a small choral ensemble. Behind him hung the iconic Bulldog banner, a fitting backdrop for Daniel, who will attend Butler this fall on a music scholarship.
Daniel’s journey to graduation was especially difficult. As the oldest of four children, he carried more than most teenagers ever should. His father, a Marine veteran, struggled with PTSD, and when Daniel was thirteen, his mother suffered a massive stroke. Suddenly, Daniel was helping care for his parents and his younger siblings while trying to navigate his own adolescence. The family experienced chronic homelessness until Daniel was fourteen, when HVAF provided stable housing through our Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) program. From that point on, HVAF wrapped its arms around this family.
In addition to affordable housing, HVAF provided case management, food, clothing, hygiene items, school supplies, and Christmas gifts. Daniel and his family regularly attended our Vet Engagement Committee events, where I first met them four years ago. One of the first things I learned about Daniel was that his favorite animal is the lion. It felt fitting, because Daniel truly has the heart of a lion. The phrase speaks to extraordinary bravery, courage, and resilience, qualities that define him so well.
I also quickly discovered his love of music and the beauty of his voice. Over the years, I have watched Daniel grow and mature, witnessing both the tenderness he shows to his family and the quiet strength he carries every day.
Daniel did more than graduate, he graduated with academic honors! He is breaking the cycle of poverty, making his family proud, and using his voice to pursue his dreams.
As we left the ceremony, a teacher mistakenly thought I was Daniel’s mother and said excitedly, “You should be so proud of this young man. He is very special.” I told her I was not his mother but tears still welled in my eyes. I was proud of him, nonetheless.
As I drove home that day, I kept reflecting on the impact it had on me. Daniel’s journey is a powerful reflection of HVAF’s mission. In their darkest moments, veterans and their families receive the support they need to overcome incredible obstacles and build a different future. There are so many more families like Daniel’s, each at a different stage in their journeys, all needing a helping hand. Your support keeps them going. Your support gives them the opportunity to build a better life.
