Air Force veteran Rashaun served in the military from 2008 to 2014. Now in 2020, he has been coming to HVAF’s food, clothing, and hygiene pantry for the last seven months.
After doing some research online, he found out about HVAF’s services for veterans. And after being at Wheeler Mission and hearing others’ stories with HVAF, he decided to come.
“The pantry means everything,” Rashaun said. “This pantry being available means that I get to always eat, and I always have food in my stomach. It’s been a vital resource for me.”
In addition to receiving help at the pantry, Rashaun is also connected with HVAF’s HUDVASH Coordinator – Lauren Mardis. HUD-VASH is a collaborative program between the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs. Both organizations combine HUD housing vouchers with VA supportive services to help Veterans who are homeless and their families find and sustain permanent housing.
“She helped make sure I had a warm place to stay,” Rashaun said.
But at the pantry, Rashaun does much more than get his essential items. During pantry days, on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week, he also helps with whatever needs to be done. He helps organize the pantry, label food, throw away trash, and more.
“I can’t be more blessed or thankful,” Rashaun said. “And if I can do anything to help, I’m going to do it.”
