HVAF’s First Day of School.
For non-profits receiving federal grants, October 1 is the first day of school. Brand new start, brand new year, same focus. We are showing up ready this year, pencils sharpened, supplies in hand. We have our task and it is to End Veteran Homelessness.
As we step into the next federal fiscal year, I wanted to share with you the impact HVAF made in the previous year and demonstrate the effectiveness with which we utilize every dollar granted and donated to serve Hoosier veterans.
As a recipient of the VA’s Grant and Per Diem grant, HVAF receives funds to provide transitional, or temporary, housing to veterans who are literally homeless in Indianapolis. Last grant year, HVAF provided safe housing and case management services to 274 veterans enrolled in this program.
Additionally, the VA sets three performance metrics:
1: Exits to Permanent Housing
2: Veterans Employed at Time of Exit
3: A Cap on Negative Exits
I’d like to highlight the high percentage of veterans who were successfully discharged to permanent housing TIP, or Transition in Place, is a program that prioritizes families and establishes housing in an apartment that the veteran assumes full responsibility for while enrolled in the program.
SITH, or Service Intensive Transitional Housing, is a temporary housing program for veterans who need generalized wrap around services to obtain permanent housing. Clinical is a temporary housing program for veterans with mental health and/or substance use diagnoses.
And, lastly, Bridge is a temporary housing program for veterans who need a short-term place to stay because they already have identified a permanent housing option.
Our Supportive Services for Veteran Families grant, which provides rapid rehousing and rental assistance to veterans facing homelessness, was also renewed on October 1. Last year, we were contracted to serve 350 veterans. By year end, we served 396 veterans, with a median length of time from enrollment to housing being 39 days. Each veteran receives personalized services to ensure they find permanent housing to quickly end their homelessness, and the support needed to maintain that housing.
We actively engage each veteran in our programs, singularly focused on addressing their barriers to permanent housing. The mental health and employment services we offer complement our housing programs to ensure that veterans have an opportunity to achieve self-sufficiency.
Next month, we will host our annual fundraiser, Operation Alpha. This is an opportunity for you to support the life changing work of HVAF of Indiana. You can personally impact the lives of Hoosier veterans by sponsoring and attending this year. For more information, please visit our website.
