Roger That Ep 14: We Must Protect Veterans Using Vouchers to End Homelessness
April 15, 2024Message from the CEO: Advocating against the criminalization of homeless individuals
April 17, 2024Army veteran, daughter, and grandkids found hope & housing because of your support!
Your support not only helps a veteran, but it helps veterans’ families as well!
For three months last year, Amber and her two boys faced homelessness for the first time. Their house needed lots of repairs and started to grow mold – and their landlord wouldn’t fix it. They stayed at a shelter and hoped for something better.
“It was horrible. Me and my kids had never been homeless,” Amber said. “So that was something very new to us.”
Amber’s dad, Army veteran Jerry, also became homeless last year after moving out of his friends’ house. He came to the shelter to stay with his daughter and grandkids, and Amber began researching services that could help all of them. During his research, she found HVAF.
Just weeks after finding out about HVAF’s life-changing services, the Thomas family got connected with one of HVAF’s case managers and moved into their own home!
They are especially appreciative of their case manager, Anne, for being there for them during this difficult time.
“Anne is an angel. She sticks by us,” Jerry said. “Whatever we need, we can call her. She checks on us, from day one she’s been there and is still there.”
Anne said she is honored to have the opportunity to serve a three-generational family – something she doesn’t experience often. Now, she is still supporting the Thomas family, as she is helping them improve their credit scores and ensuring the children are set up for success at school.
“We look at the whole picture. The health of the family is really critical during this time,” Anne said. “It’s been a wonderful journey with this family. This is not a job for me, this is a mission.”
Amber also connected with HVAF’s Employment Team, and her Employment Specialist set her up with a new career as a home health aide!
One of Amber’s sons was failing in school when they were dealing with homelessness. Now, after having stable housing and support, her son is making A’s!
“I just love this program,” Amber said. “They have helped us out a lot and we’ve been blessed.”
Thank you for joining our mission so we can support veterans AND their families!
