January 15, 2025Serving Up Hope: How HVAF Helped James Rediscover His Passion for Cooking
When James first approached HVAF, he was looking for more than just assistance—he was searching for a second chance. A Navy veteran hailing from Chicago, James had faced his share of challenges after leaving the military. But thanks to his determination, a heartwarming passion for cooking, and the life-changing support of HVAF programs, today, James finds himself on the path to success and self-sufficiency.
James’s struggles were profound—he found himself homeless, living on the streets of Indianapolis, searching for stability and hope. Reflecting on his hardships, James shared, “If you’re in trouble and you need help, and you’re a veteran, come to HVAF. You know, it’s a great place to get your life started. They helped me in so many ways. I was a homeless veteran here in Indianapolis back in 2019, and HVAF—I didn’t even know that this organization existed when I got here, but they got me on a good path.”
James enrolled in several HVAF initiatives designed to support veterans struggling with homelessness or housing insecurity. From pantry visits and rental assistance to housing placement services, HVAF provided James with the tools and guidance to stabilize his life. However, it was the VetWorks Program that truly turned things around for him.
VetWorks is a multi-phase workforce development program that equips veterans with the skills and training needed to secure sustainable employment. Throughout Phase 1, James not only learned workforce essentials but also rediscovered what truly made his heart beat with joy—cooking. After graduating from the program, James began a full-time job as a chef at Second Helpings, a nonprofit focused on fighting hunger and food waste in Central Indiana.
“I got the confidence to turn my love for cooking into a career,” James shared.
James’s love for cooking traces back to his childhood when his mother taught him the staples of a good meal. But it wasn’t until he helped out a neighbor that he realized this passion could also serve as a path to a brighter future.
“My neighbors had just come back from vacation, and their fridge was empty. I offered to cook for them for a small fee,” James said. “I ended up making one of the best meals they’d ever had.”
That single act of kindness spiraled into something much greater. James recalls the joy on his neighbors’ faces and how their encouragement became a catalyst for his growth as a chef. They even gifted him a custom chef’s apron at his VetWorks graduation, decorated with pictures of their family’s favorite meals—a gesture that deeply moved him and reminded him of the community backing his dreams.
“Having that support, my friends, everyone here at HVAF, it means the world,” James said gratefully.
Now, James’s passion for food fuels not only his career but his personal life as well. Sundays are his favorite days, reserved for creating special meals that feel like celebrations.
“Sunday is my creative day,” he said. “I try new recipes, make something special for myself, and even cook for my dog. She’s my world, and I want to make the rest of her life the best it can be.”
From chicken Parmesan to Eggs Florentine, James’s culinary repertoire continues to grow. And thanks to courses at Ivy Tech and continued support from HVAF, he’s refining his skills further.
For James, the support of HVAF and its donors has been life-changing. “HVAF was there for me when I needed it most, and now I’m standing on my own two feet, doing what I love,” he said.
“If you’re listening to this and want to help other veterans like me, get involved. HVAF needs your help. Donate, volunteer, or just come down and see the impact this organization is making.”
Thanks to programs like VetWorks and the unwavering support of our HVAF programs, donors, and community partners, James has turned his life around and found a career that he’s passionate about. But for every veteran like James, there are many more who still need our help. Together, we can continue to provide hope, stability, and opportunity for those who have given so much for our country.
