Roger That Ep 19: Meet HVAF’s Longest Serving Employee, Fred!
July 1, 2024Press Release: HVAF expands services to Terre Haute
July 10, 2024Army National Guard Veteran Katie is breaking her addiction cycles
Army National Guard veteran Katie has battled substance addiction for the last 12 years. Her last relapse was last fall and lasted four months straight. While she did go to rehab, that led her to losing EVERYTHING: her marriage, kids, house, vehicle, and job.
“I was literally homeless, everything was gone,” Katie said. “Just one bad decision with a weak mentality and not being emotionally mature enough to handle the situation I was put in.”
She went to a rehab facility for five months. During those five months, she was able to do a lot of self-reflection and healing. While there, they make a recovery plan and ask where you plan to go when you leave the rehab facility. Katie said she had nowhere to go. She called so many places and couldn’t afford the rent.
An employee at the facility – who also happened to have previously worked for HVAF – told Katie she should reach out to HVAF for help. Thinking it sounded too good to be true, Katie went ahead and talked to one of our screeners to see what they had to say.
Thankfully, it wasn’t too good to be true. There was an open unit at one of our permanent supportive housing apartments, ready for her to move into!
Katie believes if it wasn’t for HVAF, she would be back in rehab. Now moved into her apartment and working closely with her case manager, she is focused on continuing her recovery and getting reconnected with her children.
“You guys were there for me for any question I had. You guys went above and beyond for anything I could ask for!”
We cannot provide life-changing, life-saving services for Hoosier Heroes, like Katie, without you!
