HVAF’s veterans community center – our central hub for all veterans seeking assistance – is officially renamed the Colonel Donald W. Moreau, Sr. Veterans Community Center. We celebrated the special dedication with a ceremony and ribbon cutting last night. Special speakers included Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, Congressman Andre Carson, IDVA Director Dennis Wimer, and more.

The Veterans Community Center offers homeless and near-homeless veterans in Central Indiana access to a robust food, clothing, and hygiene pantry, computer lab, meeting space, and library containing Col. Moreau’s book collection. In the lobby, you will find his uniform, eight Sagamore of the Wabash awards, and additional memorabilia from his extensive military and civic service careers.

“We were honored to be joined the Moreau Family, Mayor Hogsett, Congressman Carson and many other guests to dedicate our Veterans Community Center in honor of Colonel Donald Moreau. I can think of no better way to pay tribute to Don’s legacy of service to our nation and state than be dedicating the Community Center in his honor,” HVAF CEO Emmy Hildebrand said. “Going forward, veterans will be able to receive life-changing, life-saving assistance at the Colonel Donald W. Moreau, Sr. Veterans Community Center, where they will have access to our food and clothing pantries, as well as the myriad of supportive programs and services designed to ensure every veteran receives hope, housing and self-sufficiency.”

After Col. Moreau passed away in August 2017, his family established the Moreau Fund to support HVAF’s mission. This fund will be used to support the Moreau Veterans Community Center and all that it provides, including the food, clothing, and hygiene pantry. Last year, 766 veterans visited the pantry, and the demand is increasing.

With food prices soaring due to inflation, more veterans are facing food insecurity than ever before. We have doubled the number of veterans visiting our pantry.

Army National Guard veteran Wiloner is one of the 250 veterans that rely on our pantry each month. Because of your support, Wiloner has been able to take advantage of the donated food, clothing, and hygiene items for 16 years!

“I always know if I have a situation, I could come here to HVAF,” Wiloner said. “It’s nice to know that I won’t go hungry if I don’t have food.”
