OPERATION ALPHA 2022: Truly the “Biggest, Bestest” Veterans Day Party in the state!
November 16, 2022How HVAF’s case managers helped Army veteran Nicki fight breast cancer (and win!)
December 12, 2022HVAF has helped Army veteran John off and on for 5 years!
Transition from military to civilian world
John served in the Army for seven years. After he got out in 1987, the transition was difficult.
“When I was in the Army, I was a sergeant, so I was giving orders,” John said. “When I came home, I had to start taking orders. So that was kind of different.”
Coming to HVAF
About five years ago, John sadly experienced homelessness. After turning to the Homeless Initiative Program (HIP), they referred him to HVAF. He moved into one of our transitional housing units, Warman, shortly after.
Ever since 2017, John has come to HVAF whenever he needs help with housing, employment, or essential items in our food, clothing, and hygiene pantry.
“You guys always get me in and out,” John said. “I love knowing that I have a backup plan.”
Most weeks, you can find John at our food, clothing, and hygiene pantry. Veterans are able to shop for their necessary items once per week.
“The pantry is wonderful for me,” John said. “It works real good for me.”
John encourages his fellow veterans to come to HVAF for help if they need it.
“Sometimes pride can get you hurt. It’s not hard at all to ask for help,” John said. “I have no problem asking for help if I need it.”
Next steps
Three months ago, John moved into one of our transitional houses. He has applied to live in one of our Permanent Supportive Housing units and is on the waiting list. For now, he feels comfortable living at our Jackson House and receiving help from his case manager, Lena.
“John continues to work hard on locating permanent housing, despite his barriers,” Lena said. “John advocates for keeping the Jackson house clean, by encouraging other vets to keep their rooms and common areas clean, which is a big help.
“Gosh, I’ve been so grateful for HVAF,” John said.
