The Point In Time (PIT) Count results are out, and it shows veteran homelessness in Marion County decreased by 35 percent. The number of veterans experiencing homelessness declined from 257 in 2021 to 167 in 2022.
The PIT Count – required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development – is a count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. Volunteers from various local organizations – including Helping Veterans And Families (HVAF) – administered the survey over a 5-day period to determine how many individuals are homeless.
HVAF has provided housing services for Indianapolis veterans since 1993 and operates 17 properties in Marion County that provide temporary and permanent supportive housing. As a wrap-around service agency, HVAF also provides intensive case management, employment support, and basic needs including food, hygiene, and clothing.
Last year, HVAF’s programs and services resulted in 270 veterans becoming self-sufficient and moving into permanent housing. More than 100 veterans have been permanently housed already this year.
“I am so excited to see the significant reduction in veteran homelessness in Indianapolis, and proud to see the work of our staff and community partners making such a positive impact,” HVAF CEO Emmy Hildebrand said. “It is a relief to know that fewer veterans, men and women who protected our freedom, are facing homelessness in our community.
“Just as veterans have sacrificed to serve our country, it is imperative that we commit to doing the same for them,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett. “HVAF fulfills this mission in Indianapolis by providing housing and re-integration services for homeless veterans and programs. The 2022 Point in Time Count’s 35 percent decrease in veterans experiencing homelessness is in large part credited to HVAF’s leadership. I’m thankful to HVAF for their partnership during this critical time.”
