Shane served in the Army as a Sargent and a Flight Engineer for 6 years, serving in both Afghanistan and South Korea. Following his service, he struggled and faced legal trouble. In order to move forward and improve his life, he needed work.
Shane was referred to the employment services at HVAF and worked with Employment Coordinator, Kiara Walker, to secure a job.
“Shane came to me with a job opportunity in hand and knew that he would need tools for the job. However, Shane did not fully have the job yet.” Kiara said. “After about 2 weeks of speaking with the owner and the owner’s father they finally gave me an answer and the answer was yes, they would hire Shane. I was so excited!”
Kiara diligently connected with Shane’s future employer to ensure he would get the job.
The main issue holding Shane back from getting the mechanic job was the lack of tools. Thanks to the Bob Woodruff Foundation Grant, the Employment Team was able to purchase all the tools Baker needed in order to thrive in his new job, even in the midst of a pandemic.
“I’ve always struggled with asking for help but then life happens, and I can’t function as I used to.” Shane said. “Every once in a while, I need a hand up.”
With the help of HVAF, Shane has been able to prove himself at his job, already receiving a promotion and a raise in just a couple of months but more importantly he has been able to build a trust with his employers.
“(Kiara) was helpful and great. She kept picking me back up…” Shane said. “It was a big blessing to help me get back on my feet again.”
Shane has goals that working at this job will allow him to achieve like finding his own place.
“Shane is a dedicated and reliable person.” Kiara said. “Everything that he said he wanted to do he accomplished.”
