February 28, 2019‘I’m so happy to be with HVAF’ Homeless Navy veteran lands job thanks to HVAF
In 1990, Jimmy Potts joined the United States Navy. Starting at the Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois for his training and education, Jimmy went on to serve for six years— being a part of Desert Shield and serving for eight months in Iraq for Desert Storm.
Fast forward to 22 years later— Jimmy found himself homeless in May 2018. He lost his job and his apartment. Thankfully, a friend told him about HVAF and he called to receive help.
Now, Jimmy lives in our Manchester Apartments— which are connected to our headquarters off of Pennsylvania Street. Through our employment program, he was able to land a job working the front desk at the VA Hospital. He is also involved with Back On My Feet: a non-profit housed in HVAF Headquarters that combats homelessness through the power of running, community support, and essential employment and housing resources.
“The camaraderie with Back on My Feet is just outstanding— everyone I have either ran with or walked with,” Jimmy said. “It’s just a wonderful opportunity to do that.”
While he was receiving resume help from our employment team, Jimmy also volunteered in our food, clothing, and hygiene pantry. He said he likes to volunteer in our pantry because he is able to give back to the community and to HVAF.
“I’m very blessed and I’m just so happy to be with HVAF,” Jimmy said. “I recommend it to anyone who needs assistance or help, it will help veterans to get motivated and back into civilian life.”
