December 20, 2021#12VetsOfChristmas Day Eight: Navy Veteran Darnell
This story is part of HVAF’s annual tradition: 12 Vets of Christmas, where each day we are featuring a veteran whose life has been positively changed because of the essential services and programs HVAF provided in 2021.
Navy veteran Darnell M. first came to HVAF in 2014, he needed help with housing. Since he had a great experience with our case managers, he knew he could come back if he needed help again.
Recently, Darnell lost his job as an electrician. Instead of being upset, he saw it as an opportunity to reevaluate his career choices. HVAF’s Employment Team encouraged Darnell and turned his dreams into plans.
“They helped me out with the funds and find a great school,” Darnell said, as he described how he has wanted to become a truck driver for a few years. “The team had my back 100 percent.”
Thanks to the Bob Woodruff grant, HVAF’s Employment Team covered the costs for Darnell to attend CDL school. And just last week, Darnell received his certification AND starts his new job next week!
He credits Employment Specialist, Kiara, for helping him get to where he is today. Kiara helped Darnell redo his resume, and researched which CDL program would be best for him.
“I couldn’t do it without her,” Darnell said. “I really have faith in HVAF because of her. It’s not just a job for her – it’s a passion.
